Sometimes the only way to find out if you can do it is to “just do it!” This applies to everything in life and in business and especially – Leadership.
I realize not everyone is comfortable assuming a leadership role. I have come to believe that the reason behind this has to do with the uncertainty of what’s expected of a leader.
So what’s the definition a leader? James MacGregor Burns, in his book Leadership, came up with a definition I like. Here it is.
Leadership is inducing followers to act for certain goals that represent the values and the motivations – the wants and needs, the aspirations and expectations – of both leaders and followers. And the genius of leadership lies in the manner in which leaders see and act on their own and their followers’ values and motivations.
Are you a follower or leader?
Its OK to walk for a time as the last one in the group. Its even OK to spend time mingling in the middle, but ultimately everyone at sometime in his or her lifetime must move out in front and lead.
You have no way of understanding leadership and reaping its rewards until you assume that responsibility!
